Cards reach deal with Penny

The St. Louis Post Disptach is reporting the Cards have agreed in principle to a one-year, incentive-laden contract with free-agent righthander Brad Penny, pending results of a physical scheduled for Tuesday.

The Cardinals outbid Penny's former team, the San Francisco Giants, in what may be the first of two moves to complete the team's starting rotation.

GM John Mozeliak refused to confirm the deal Monday evening but acknowledged that any move for a starting pitcher could be followed by another.

Brad Penny update

According to the Denver Post , the Rockies' interest in Brad Penny is waning over concerns about how he would fit in their clubhouse. Penny, who asked for and received his release from the Red Sox, clears waivers Monday and wants to play for a contender.

The Rangers, White Sox and Marlins are among those teams interested, according to multiple media reports.

The Miami Herald reports there has also been speculation that the Twins might claim him off waivers and take on the remainder of his salary, which would be anywhere from $1.1 million to $1.4 million.

And, according to the New York Post , Penny might be considered an upgrade over Sergio Mitre in the fifth rotation spot. After he clears waivers, Penny would cost the club signing him only $100,000.

More Brade Penny rumors

According to the Boston Globe , sources indicate the Red Sox Sox have fielded multiple calls and some offers for Brad Penny but haven't heard anything that would want to make them deal the righthander, even with a logjam in their starting rotation.

The source also hinted the Sox like their depth and would need to be overwhelmed to make a deal. While that scenario could take place as teams get more desperate to find pitching, the Sox feel they can hold off even if it creates tough decisions internally.

Brad Penny - Braves, Phillies

Braves GM Frank Wren told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution there is no truth to an earlier report that said the Braves were interested in a trade for Boston's Brad Penny. ...Several Braves players and manager Bobby Cox seemed equally surprised by the report, which speculated that the Braves might open a spot for Penny in their rotation by moving Kenshin Kawakami to the bullpen .

However, another media report speculates that the Phillies have been watching Penny as they continue to search for pitching help.

Penny Rumors and Glavine and the Red Sox

Brad Penny would love to stay with the Red Sox but could it be time for him to move on?

Penny told Michael Silverman of The Boston Herald , “Oh, I’d love to stay. I signed here and they told me it was something they’d want for more than one year if everything worked out.

He added that GM Theo Epstein would be the better person to disccus the issue but whatever happens, Penny will "make the best of it."

In the same report, Silverman also says the Red Sox are “close to the top, if not at the top” of the list of teams Tom Glavine would pitch for.. according to a source close to Glavine.

Boston Red Sox and Trade Talk

Theo Epstein told the Boston Herald the thinks the Sox will be active in trade talks "as far as discussions go."  However, "I would never want to predict if we’re going to be active enough that we make a trade. There are areas we can make improvement, either internally or externally."

He might look for someone to pitch in if David Ortiz does not bounce back OR at shortstop if Jed Lowrie cannot rehab from injury quickly enough.

As for pitching, the Herald suggests a trade of Brad Penny is probably only a 50-50 possibility for now... while Josh Beckett and Jon Lester's worst could be behind them.
